Dubai finds itself entangled in case against R. Kelly

Mar 21, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Dubai found itself entangled in the sex abuse case against American R&B singer R. Kelly on Thursday after the performer asked a U.S. judge to allow him to come to the Arabian Peninsula sheikhdom to perform shows and "meet with the royal family." Officials in Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press regarding the singer's request, which an Illinois judge could consider at a court hearing on Friday. However, Kelly's request highlighted the close political and security ties between the U.S. and the...

Careless loading of cargo containers sinks ship in Iran port

Mar 21, 2019

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian state TV says careless loading of cargo has capsized a ship in the southern port of Bandar Abbas, sending port workers scrambling to retrieve any of the 153 containers that were suddenly submerged. The report says only one Indian seaman aboard the Comoros-owned LS Star was injured in the foot in the incident on Monday. Mehdi Haghshenas, deputy chief of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization, told the TV the ship was not being loaded properly and that there was "poor coordination between the ship's first officer and the crane operator" lifting the containers on board. Mar 21, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Under a large circus-style tent, Dior showcased its latest haute couture collection to a crowd of Mideast-based fashionistas, social media figures, celebrities, buyers, designers and editors Monday night. It was the first show in Dubai for the French fashion house, which initially presented its spring-summer 2019 haute couture collection in Paris in January. The presentation in Dubai, however, also included 15 entirely new creations unveiled especially for the show's design conscious Arab Gulf-based audience. Dubai's exuberant displays of luxury and the city's surreal, futuristic-looking skyline were the ideal backdrop to the show, where creative director...

Mar 21, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia appeared in a closed-door court hearing Wednesday on unknown charges after being detained in a crackdown last year, making their first appearance before a judge in a case that has sparked international outrage. The arrests came just before Saudi Arabia began allowing women to drive, something women's rights activists had been demanding for years. The arrests showed that King Salman and his 33-year-old son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, are willing to crack down on any opposition even while courting the West. It also was sandwiched between the mass...

Across Baghdad, a moment of respite and guarded hope

Mar 21, 2019

BAGHDAD — Baghdad's main commercial district has seen more bombings than its residents can count. Death visited almost daily during times of war — most horrifically, a 2015 suicide bombing that ripped through two shopping malls, killing over 300 people. But over the past year or so, the residents of Karrada have felt more normal than they have in decades. Streets lined with food stalls are crowded with shoppers, coffee shops and restaurants are packed until late, and the grey cement blast walls that protected against bombings are being removed. "I used to go to school and come back home,...
